You may wonder why Mowgli is wearing a cone of shame. Well. As much as we like to stay away from stereotyping dog breeds, Mowgli got attacked by a pit bull at the dog park tonight. I have met a number of really sweet, non-aggressive, lovable pit bulls and pit mixes, but this particular one unfortunately did not fit that bill. Without being provoked, it ran up to Mowgli and grabbed him by the throat and latched on to him and would not let go.
The worst thing about it is that this dog came into the dog park and started running around like a madman and I thought, that dog has no business being in the dog park, and started a fight with another dog. I thought about leaving, but Mowgli had had an upset stomach earlier in the day and was ignoring the other dogs and I figured it would be fine.
Well, the other dog ran up to Mowgli, out of nowhere, and bit him. So I suppose the lesson here is, listen to your gut, and don’t bring your aggressive dogs to the dog park.
Several hours in the emergency vet (and $600) later, Mowgli is missing a bunch of fur, has cleaned wounds, is wearing a cone of shame, and on heavy-duty painkillers and antibiotics for the next week or so. Most importantly, he is OK. I just felt so helpless with a dog latched onto his throat who would not let go. I thought anything I did to try to pull him away would make his injuries worse, since the other dog had such a good grip on him.
Mowgli’s cardinal rule is that he is not allowed in the bed, and I am pretty sure that will get broken tonight because I would like him as close as possible.
Also, thank you to diaryofapph and fatgirlinohio for keeping me company while I waited for Mowgli tonight. I had fun with you (I always have fun with you) and it was so nice to have a distraction!
